CHUGWATER, WYOMING - Profile
<Picture>
Chugwater! How did a town get a name like that? Indians stampeded buffalo across the
plains to charge over nearby bluffs and the shaggy beast crashed with a "chug"
to their deaths near the waters below!
Indians have camped along Chug Creek's banks for thousands of years. Such tribes as the
Comanche, Kiowas, Shoshoni, Crow, Arapaho, Cheyenne and Souix have been along the creek
and hunted in the area. Arrowhead hunters still find pieces of arrowheads and occasionally
a complete arrowhead in nearby hills. Wild game, especially antelope and deer, are still
hunted by sportsmen from all over the United States every fall.
Nestled in a scenic valley, protected by bold rimrock and sloping hills, Chugwater has a
vast wealth of history. Early ranches, cowboys and indians are an important part of the
past. Three National Historic Sites, the Swan Land & Cattle Company, the Diamond
Ranch, and the McDonald Ranch, are legends in themselves. When homesteaders arrived and
plowed the sod, an ocean of wheat grew on the plains east of town. Grain elevators now
highlight the skyline, monuments to the farmer.
Today, this agriculturally-related town is stablized by it's fine school and churches. The
museum portrays the exciting yesterdays of the Indian and centennial town. Chugwater
boasts clean air, pure water, a railroad and access the I-25 with Wyoming's State Capital
and the Rocky Mountain front range market close by. Over twenty community organizations
help maintain the progressive atmosphere. The town boasts a community center was built in
1987 and is an asset for all. The famous Chugwater Chili Cook-off offers a taste of the
West.
"America the Beautiful" describes Chugwater! This small community is long on
history, but short on people. Stagecoaches stopped here...why don't you!
