Laramie Peak & Medicine Bow National Forest:
<Picture>
Laramie Peak is the view to the west of Wheatland. It has an elevation of 10,272 feet. You
can reach Laramie Peak in a four wheel drive or high clearance vehicle getting off
Interstate I-25 at El Rancho Road. Take Fish Creek Road which is paved to Harris Park
Road, which is a gravel road. At the foot of Laramie Peak is a campground with bathrooms.
Continue on up the mountain to the top. It is worth the drive.
If you like to hunt, you can take Highway 34 off Interstate I-25 to Blue Grass Tunnel
Road, across the Laramie River about a mile to the Laramie Peak Unit in the Medicine Bow
National Forest. There are no developed camps and it is used mostly by hunters. There are
also many ranches in the area that will allow hunting for a fee, or have outfitters take
you on a guided tour. See the hunting page for a list of these ranches. These are good
gravel roads, and you could take a vehicle or RV if you go slow and take it easy. If it
has been raining and is very wet, you may wish to take a four-wheel drive into some of the
areas.
Although the Sybille Wildlife Research unit, and much of the Medicine Bow National Forest
are in Albany and Converse County, Platte County enjoys the benefits of having this
National Forest within a 45 minute drive away.
